Wall Cabinets and Upper Storage by Garage Space Design

The most useful storage in a garage is often the wall above waist height, and it usually sits empty. Wall cabinets hang there, keeping paint, chemicals, tools and small gear at eye level and out of the way of the car.

We position them with heights and depths checked against door swing and reach. Closed doors keep dust off, open cubbies keep the most-used items visible, and a lockable door can protect anything you want kept from children.

You may need this if

  • The wall above the bench is empty
  • Paint and chemicals sit on the floor
  • You trip over bins near the car
  • You want a tidier look
How it works

From plan to finished.

The steps for wall cabinets & upper storage, in the order they happen.

  1. 01

    Mark the zones

We decide which items belong at eye level and which belong higher or lower.

  2. 02

    Check clearances

Heights and depths are tested against doors, car mirrors and the reach of the people using them.

  3. 03

    Anchor to the structure

Cabinets are mounted into studs or masonry with the right fasteners and a level, continuous line.

  4. 04

    Fit the interiors

Adjustable shelves, bins and dividers are added and the doors are aligned.

Be honest about fit

Is it right for your garage?

A good fit when

  • Workbench walls
  • Chemicals and paint storage
  • Cabinet runs that need height

Worth knowing

  • Wall cabinets must hit studs or solid masonry, so the wall type decides the fastening method.
  • Cars and ladders should be considered when choosing depth.
Questions

Good questions about wall cabinets & upper storage.

How high should wall cabinets hang?

Typically with enough clearance above the counter to work and reach comfortably. We adjust for the people using the space.

Can they hold heavy items?

Yes, within the rated capacity of the cabinet and its mounting. We specify mounting to suit the load.

Open cubbies or closed doors?

Doors keep things clean, while open cubbies suit items you grab every day. Many designs mix both.
