Bike and Outdoor Gear Storage by Garage Space Design

Bikes, scooters, kayaks, camping tents and sports gear take a surprising amount of space and tend to land on the floor. Dedicated racks and hoists give each item a home on the wall or ceiling, where it is out of the way and easy to grab.

Vertical or horizontal bike hooks suit different walls, pulley hoists raise a kayak to the ceiling with a pull of a rope and gear lockers keep helmets, pads and balls together. We plan these near the garage door for quick access.

You may need this if

  • Bikes are piled in a corner
  • A kayak or paddleboard needs a home
  • Camping and sports gear are scattered
  • You are tripping over equipment
How it works

From plan to finished.

The steps for bike & outdoor gear storage, in the order they happen.

  1. 01

    Count the gear

We list the bikes, boats and sports gear and their sizes and weights.

  2. 02

    Choose the holders

Hooks, racks, hoists and lockers are matched to each item.

  3. 03

    Place near the door

Frequently used gear sits closest to the exit, and seasonal items go higher.

  4. 04

    Install and test

Mounts are fastened to structure and loaded to confirm they carry the weight.

Be honest about fit

Is it right for your garage?

A good fit when

  • Active families and enthusiasts
  • Coastal and mountain homes
  • Cluttered entryways

Worth knowing

  • Hoists and ceiling storage require solid joists and clearances.
  • Wall racks should be spaced so handlebars do not collide.
Questions

Good questions about bike & outdoor gear storage.

Vertical or horizontal bike storage?

Vertical saves wall length, and horizontal avoids lifting the front wheel. We choose based on wall space and the people using it.

Can a hoist hold a kayak?

Yes. Pulley or motorized hoists are designed for kayaks, boards and roof boxes, fixed to joists.

How do I keep tires from going flat?

Hanging by the frame or wheel and keeping tires properly inflated helps. We choose hooks that protect rims and frames.
