Overhead Garage Storage Racks by Garage Space Design

The ceiling is the most underused surface in the house. Overhead racks hang from joists and hold tubs of holiday decorations, camping gear and other items you only touch a few times a year. In a typical two-car garage, a couple of racks can store dozens of bins without using an inch of floor.

Safety and planning matter. Racks must be lagged into solid structure, loaded within their rating and set at heights that clear the garage door, the opener and your tallest vehicle. Motorized lifts make bulky items such as kayaks or roof boxes easy to raise and lower.

You may need this if

  • Bins crowd the floor
  • Holiday and seasonal items are always in the way
  • You own a kayak, paddleboard or roof box
  • You want more storage without losing wall space
How it works

From plan to finished.

The steps for overhead storage racks, in the order they happen.

  1. 01

    Check the ceiling

We locate joists or trusses, check spacing, and see what the structure can carry.

  2. 02

    Plan the clearances

Rack position is set around the door track, opener, lights and the tallest vehicle.

  3. 03

    Install into structure

Hangers and brackets are fastened into solid framing with the right hardware.

  4. 04

    Load and label

Bins are loaded within the rated capacity, with the heaviest closest to the structure.

Why it matters

What you get.

01

Reclaim the floor

Seasonal clutter leaves the ground and the walls.

02

Scalable

Racks can be added over more bays or extended.

03

Lifts for bulky items

Motorized or pulley lifts raise kayaks, bikes and boxes.

04

Out of sight

Stored items are above eye level and out of the way.

After: the same ceiling clean with black overhead racks holding lidded bins
Before: a garage ceiling stacked with boxes, ladders and draped cords above a car

Be honest about fit

Is it right for your garage?

A good fit when

  • Garages with 9 foot ceilings or higher
  • Seasonal and bulky storage
  • Tight garages that need more space

Worth knowing

  • Ceiling structure limits what can be hung, so we check it before designing.
  • Racks must clear the door and opener, which can reduce the usable area.
Questions

Good questions about overhead storage racks.

Is overhead storage safe?

When properly installed into structure and loaded within capacity, yes. Never exceed the rating and avoid hanging near the door track.

How much can an overhead rack hold?

Capacities vary by product and ceiling structure. We specify to your joists and your load.

What if my garage ceiling is low?

Low ceilings limit overhead storage, and we can suggest shallower racks or wall-based alternatives.
