01 Use matching bins
Uniform bins stack neatly, fill shelves efficiently and slide easily. Clear bins show contents, while opaque bins look tidier. Choose lids that latch to keep dust and pests out, and rigid bins that do not collapse under stacking.
Avoid cardboard, which attracts moisture and pests.
02 Zone by season
Group items by season or holiday and give each its own bin or two. When the season arrives, one bin comes down and goes back at the end. Keep the next season’s bin at easy height and the farthest one up high.
This keeps the swap to minutes.
03 Label clearly
Label the end of each bin, where you see it on the shelf. Color coding works well for the family, and an inventory list on the inside of a cabinet door can help.
Photograph contents for reference.
04 Protect fragile things
Pack ornaments and delicates in padded dividers. Avoid garages that swing from freezing to very hot for the most fragile items. Insulation helps, as does raising bins off the floor.
Keep silica gel packs in bins in humid climates.
? Common questions
Where should holiday bins go?
High or overhead since you touch them once a year, with the next holiday’s bin at a handy height.
Clear or opaque bins?
Clear for finding things, opaque for tidiness. Labels help either way.
How do I keep bins dry?
Lift them off the floor and use latching lids. Check them for moisture each season.
